The Antechamber

The Antechamber to the western apartment, arranged as an enfilade, contains a collection of furniture and decorative-functional items which manifest the fashion for chinoiserie. They consist of a secretary desk with bird and flower motifs executed in tortoiseshell against a black background (18th/19th century), a black-lacquered writing desk with gilded decorations (late 18th century), a lacquered casket made in the Chinese style, as well as a Neo-Rococo commode with imitation of black lacquer (France, 3rd quarter of the 19th century). Also standing here are a silk screen with gold embroidery and two pairs of Chinese vases (1st half of the 19th century) – the lid of one of them is decorated with a figure of the Chinese Foo dog; the other, smaller vase, is adorned with handles in the shapes of Chinese lions.
