Stanisław Poniatowski of the Ciołek coat of arms (1676–1762), Castellan of Kraków, father of King Stanisław August Poniatowski. Pendant to the portrait of his wife, Konstancja née Czartoryska (cat. no. 15).

In the catalogues of the Stanisław August collection dating from before 1795, this painting was recorded as painted by Bacciarelli; whereas in the so-called main catalogue of 1795 it is described as a copy by an anonymous hand after Antoine Pesne (1683–1757). …

This is undoubtedly a mediocre copy, painted by a different hand than its pendant—the portrait of Konstancja née Czartoryska (cat. no. 15), although, like said pendant, most probably in c. 1777–78, for the Royal Bedchamber at the Łazienki. It was hung above the door to the right of the bed.

It is a reduced copy of a knee-length portrait of Stanisław Poniatowski painted by Bacciarelli in the years 1777–78 for the Old Audience Chamber at the Royal Castle in Warsaw. This portrait, the property of Versailles, is on display in its original place in the Royal Castle … . The prototype for Bacciarelli’s painting in the Old Audience Chamber was, in turn, the full-length portrait by Antoine Pesne, painted after 1726 (the sitter is wearing the Order of the White Eagle which he was awarded that same year). … It is very likely that Bacciarelli based the Old Audience Chamber portrait on this particular painting, and that his copy later served as the model for the bust-length version made for the Łazienki by someone employed in his studio.
