Jakub Zygmunt Rybiński (d. 1725) was the Crown Grand Master of the Hunt 1710–14, Voivode of Chełmno 1714–25 and at the same time, General of the Crown Artillery, as well as Marshal of the Crown Tribunal in 1715 and 1725.

The painting belongs to a group of 15 portraits which are traditionally believed to have been acquired by Stanisław August in 1764 from Kasper Lubomirski, together with the Ujazdów estate … . The painting may have also belonged to King August II the Strong who leased the estate in the years 1720–33. The 1739 inventory of Saxon royal residences in Warsaw records ‘H. Woywod von Culm und Cron Feld Zeugmeister Rybinski’ among the ‘sechs und zwanzig Ritter des Pohln. Weisen-Adlers In Lebens-Grösse’ … . …

A full-length portrait of Rybiński is listed in the 1769 inventory of the Royal Castle in Warsaw, in King Stanisław August’s apartments … ; it may be the same one which is recorded in the above-mentioned 1739 inventory of Saxon royal residences in Warsaw.

In the 1783, 1793, 1793–95 and 1795 catalogues of the Stanisław August collection, the painting is described as ‘Jacob Rybiński, Palatin de Chelm’, and recorded as being an anonymous work; likewise in 19th-century sources and literature. … .

The Łazienki painting is a copy of a portrait in the Wilanów Palace Museum, which was mistakenly published as being a likeness of Jan Szembek … . … The original, unlike the copy, shows the sitter without the riband of the Order of the White Eagle. It is not known exactly when Rybiński was awarded the Order, but it was between the date of its establishment in 1705 and 1712 … . It can, therefore, be assumed with a great degree of certainty that the original in Wilanów was painted before 1712, and the Łazienki copy after that date. [See D. Juszczak, H.
